BVD-PI Testing
Information
BVD is affecting your operation
BVD challenges producer profitability with increased abortions, stillbirths and risk to healthy cattle. It challenges stocker operations and feedlots with reduced gain and increased sickness and death. Experts estimate that the financial impact of BVDV averages a loss of $30-$40 per head. BVD testing can save cattle and money.

FAQs
Can I identify a BVD-PI calve by sight?
No. It is a common misunderstanding that BVD calves can be identified by sight as sickly calves. Actually BVD-PI calves appear healthy. Although the persistently infected calves have the virus, their body does not fight the virus. The persistently infected calve does not have a fever or nasal discharge as would a non-PI calf exposed to the virus.
How accurate is your test?
The test kit that we use consistently correctly identifies 100% of positive and negative samples.
Does a BVD vaccination interfere with BVD-PI test?
No. The BVD-PI test is not positive on a vaccinated calf. All cattle should be vaccinated against BVD.
My cattle have been vaccinated. Should I still BVD test?
Yes. A vaccination has no affect on a BVD-PI calf and BVDV affects vaccinated cattle. The tremendous amount of virus secreted by a PI calf can overwhelm a level of immunity that would be protective under a less sever exposure.
