Johne’s Testing

Information

A National Health Monitoring system study found that infected dairy herds experience an average loss of $40 per cow in herds with a low Johne’s diseases clinical cull rate while herds with a high Johne’s disease clinical cull rate lost on average $277 per cow.  This loss was due to reduced milk production, early culling, and poor body condition at culling.

FAQS

68% of dairies are infected with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), the organisim that causes Johne’s disease.  (National Animal Monitoring System Dairy, 2007 study)

8% of beef herds are infected with Johne’s.   Beef cows infected with Johne’s disease produce less milk resulting in lighter calves at weaning and infected cows can be slower to breed back.
